The true test

I'm putting my home-made detergent to the test -- I'm washing some of Carl's clothes! HA!

I did make my own Oxy-clean yesterday as well, and it worked WONDERFULLY as I think I said. It makes me so happy! I just mixed up some baking soda with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide to make a thick paste, and apply to the clothes. Seriously, this got out Keevia's poop stain, which the actual Oxi-clean cannot!

For my powedered detergent, I used the following recipe. It doubles well!

1 cup of Borax 20 Mule Team
1 cup of Baking soda
1 cup of Oxi-clean FREE
Just mix well and use 3 tablespoons to a 1/3 of a cup for each load.

My liquid detergent recipe (I halfed it and use a gallon water jug to hold it in)
1 bar of soap
2 Gallons of hot water
2 cups of baking soda

Grate the bar of soap and place it in a heavy bottom pot. Just cover with water and heat until melted. Mix with the baking soda and the water. It'll glop up on you after a bit, just stir it or shake it and it'll be fine! I also added about a 1/3 of a cup of Borax to this recipe.

I got these recipes from here or here, although I did modify them somewhat. This stuff cleans WONDERFULLY. I plan on making my own multipurpose cleaner (vinegar, water, etc) as well! The only problem I'm having right now is that the cloth diapers are rough, but I think it's because I air dry them instead of in the dryer-- you know the crunchy, krinkly feeling? I'm not sure how to get rid of it...I wash them, then dry them for about 5-10 minutes to get the initial wetness out of them, then hang them up to dry. Any suggestions?

Hope you find these handy! I'll keep you updated how my poo-less life goes, I need to "wash" it tonight!

  3. you can add a couple of drops of essential oil to your laundry soap if you want it to smell better. i also make my own dishwasher soap and hand soap, they are on my blog

  4. Hey Shaina, I'm glad to find these! I'm just about out of laundry detergent and I was thinking about making my own. Your recipes look simpler than the other ones I've seen.

Also... I don't know if it will help any, but have you tried using white vinegar instead of fabric softener? It may help with the rough diapers.... I don't know - I don't wash diapers anymore! :-)
